Jackson Hole Tourism Forecast

The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has released its latest latest lodging barometer, the DestiMetrics Retail Report. This report offers a 60-Day advance view that identifies occupancy strengths and opportunities. It also tracks recent trends in the industry. The most salient of which are that occupancy for all destinations in January was up 3.3 percent versus the same time last year, while the rate was up 5.1 percent for the month. Locally, Jackson Hole occupancy was up 9.8 percent in January versus 2016, accompanied by an increase in rate of 8.7 percent. Jackson Hole occupancy for the past six months (August – January) increased 4.8 percent compared to the same period last year, while rate also increased 10.1 percent. Looking forward, on-the-books aggregate occupancy for all destinations in the upcoming six months (February – July) is up 1.5 percent, while the rate is up 6.1 percent from the same period last year.  Locally, Jackson Hole on-the-books occupancy for February 2017 is up 10.2 percent compared to 2016, accompanied by an increase in rate of 10.2 percent. Occupancy on-the-books for the upcoming six months (February- July) is down -0.3 percent compared to the same period last year, with an increase in rate of 14.2 percent. Jackson Hole bookings taken in January for arrival January– June are up 4.7 percent compared to the same period last year with increases in three of the six months within scope.

Other Jackson Hole economic data of note:

  • Teton County Lodging Tax for November 2016 was up by 12% as compared to November 2015 and up 18% as compared to November 2014. Teton County Lodging Tax for July through January 2016 was up by 9% and up 23% as compared to the same time periods in 2015 and 2014, respectively.
  • Sales & Use Tax Income for Teton County for December 2016 was up by 22% as compared to 2015 and up 23% as compared to December 2014. Reference revenue.wyo.gov
  • Unemployment rate for December 2016 was down by .40% as compared to December 2015 and down .90% as compared to December 2014.
  • Visitation at the Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center (JH & GY VC) for January 2017 was up by .89% as compared to January 2016 and down 6% as compared to January 2015.
  • Business Licenses Issued were up by 300% as compared to January 2016 and were up 43% as compared to January 2015.
  • Real Estate sales were down by 35% (# of sales) and down 40% ($ volume) for the 4th quarter of 2016 as compared to the 4th quarter of 2015, and down by 24% (# of sales) and down 25% ($ volume) as compared to the 4th quarter of 2015.
